Early Life
Rick Ross grew up with the name William Leonard Roberts II. He was born on January 28, 1976, to William Leonard Roberts Sr. and Tommie Roberts in Clarkdale, Mississippi U.S. His family relocated to Miami, Florida, when he was a kid. And he was raised in the poverty-stricken north of Miami.
At a very young age, Ross became attracted to street music, and the artists he listened to back then were Luther Campbell, Tupac Shakur, and Notorious B.I.G., amongst others. These were artists that swept the nation with good rap hits.
Robert got admission through a football scholarship to Georgia’s Albany State University. However, his interest in academics quickly waned just within a year of commencing his studies. Robert’s interest was channeled quickly into writing rap lyrics. Whereas, to earn money and a living, he started selling drugs. Notably, all of Robert’s rap lyrics were songs that romanticized things he witnessed at a young age, like drugs. It would be absurd, yet it is worth mentioning that Robert worked as a correctional officer in Florida in the early 1990s.
Fortune and good hope led the Haitian rapper to form a rapping group in the ’90s known as the Carol City Cartel. And it was this group that propelled him to being signed to a small label named Suave House Records.
Keeping up with doing what he does best, Robert’s talent was noticed by Slip-n-Slide Records, which made them sign him. At this point, Robert adopted the stage name; Rick Ross. And he became acquainted with hip-hop heavyweights such as Trina and Trick Daddy, which made him a frequently featured artist. A feat that quickly earned him a promotion.
Career
2006 was a defining year for Ross, as his solo hit “Hustling” necessitated a bidding war amongst record executives. Every record label wanted to have the talented artist on board. But it was only a good negotiator like Jay-Z who was competent enough to strike a deal with him, taking Slip-n-Slide under a contract with his Def Jam label. This hit song peaked at #11 on the U.S. Hot R’n’B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. And the single was gold certified by the RIAA in May of that same year.
Once that precedent had been set, Ross did not relent. His appetite to succeed led to his collaborations with popular acts like Flo Rida, Nelly, R. Kelly, and T-Pain, after his Trilla 2008 sophomore album success.
In 2009, Deeper Than Rap underpinned his success, and The New York Times had the following praise for Rick Ross; “unexpectedly fantastic, by far his best.” “Few rap albums have sounded this assured, this sumptuous, in years.”
Maybach Music Group was launched in the same year. And the record label has gone on to achieve success and does not show any indication of slowing down.
Personal Life
Rick Ross is not currently married but has four children from different partners. Their names are; Toie Roberts, William Roberts III, Berkeley Hemes Roberts, and Billion Leonard Roberts.
He was once engaged to Lira Galore Mercer in 2015. However, the relationship did not see the light of day as Rick Ross did not walk Lira down the aisle.
The Miami Beach Police Department arrested Rick Ross in 2008 for possession of drugs and marijuana. In the same year, a lawsuit was filed against him by a YouTube content creator on assault allegations, where Ross was said to have assaulted the complainant at the Ozone Awards held in Houston, Texas.
In March 2018, Ross suffered a heart attack and was hospitalized. During an interview, the rapper revealed that his health problems were due to drug abuse and not following his doctor’s instructions. The rapper, realizing how vital survival is, the rapper is now strictly on a vegetarian diet and is trying as much as possible to live a healthy life.
In 2021, Rick Ross was rumored to have seen Hamisa Mobetto, as the two were spotted in Dubai sharing a romantic moment. Now with the two’s public display of affection no longer news, it seems they are dating, except maybe, they are just hooking up for fun.
Shooting while driving
Rick Ross and his girlfriend were the victims of a drive-by shooting on January 27, 2013, when Ross was celebrating his 37th birthday in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Ross and his girlfriend were unharmed, however, they managed to flee the shooting by ramming their car into an apartment.
Assets
Rick Ross bought his 235-acre estate in 2014 at Georgia. The mansion boasts 109 rooms, 12 of which are bedrooms, and 21 bathrooms, a rare architectural work, making it the largest single-family home in Georgia.
The mansion’s name, “The Promise Land,” was purchased for $10 million from its previous owner, Evander Holyfield, a boxing legend who built it in 1994.
Though it costs $1 million a year to maintain the mansion’s lawn, the rapper had continued to cut the grass himself.
According to Rozay, The Promise Land has become a tourist attraction. It was used to depict Prince Akeem’s palace in Coming to America.
It is rumored that this is not the only house in the rapper’s possession, as he has another beautiful property near Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Lifestyle
Having amassed a lot of wealth over a successful career, Rick Ross is known for his lavish lifestyle and unorthodox display of his wealth. He purchases luxurious commodities such as watches, cars, and grand celebrations.
Perhaps one of those was his birthday celebration, which took place at a Miami-based strip club, “King of Diamonds,” where it was rumored that the rapper doled out close to $1 million to carry out his VIP celebration. Influential personalities and wealthy aristocrats largely frequent the strip club.
His jewelry collections are also things of wonder. One of them includes a solid gold chain valued at $1.5 million. And this is just being modest with the list of his wealthy store.
